Environment

There is no inherent conflict between aviation and high environmental standards. On the contrary, despite all its efforts to improve efficiency, the civil aviation industry has a duty to minimise its negative environmental impacts. In the words of Austro Control’s corporate mission statement, “We are aware of our responsibility to the environment, and are making an important contribution to reducing environmental loading by air traffic.”

The procedure was launched in the spring of 2001, when 50 interested parties set out to reach agreement on measures that would reduce noise disturbance and environmental impacts from air traffic to an acceptable level. Austro Control has been playing a central role in organising the procedure in conjunction with Austrian Airlines and  Vienna Airport. The task of reaching an accommodation between 50 different parties, which was at first said to be hopeless, was successfully completed in May 2003, with the conclusion of the agreement on the first package of measures.
