Airspace

The airspace area above Austrian territory is the Vienna Flight Information Region (FIR). This airspace is divided into sectors. To optimise the flow of air traffic certain parts of the upper airspace of FIR Vienna have been delegated to neighbouring countries and vice versa.

The ACC controls the entire airspace above the approach control units, and hence all overflights.

The international airports in Graz, Innsbruck, Klagenfurt, Linz, Salzburg and Vienna are “controlled aerodromes”. In other words, each has a tower (TWR) which is responsible for the traffic on the runways and taxiways, and in the airspace in the immediate vicinity of the airport, as well as an approach control centre (APP).
