Solar and Photovoltaic Systems
§ 94 LFG (Aviation Act)

Photovoltaic systems (PV systems) can have both electrical and optical interference effects on aviation. Therefore, certain regulations must be observed during installation.

  • Approval Requirement: PV plants with a total area of up to 100 m² are exempt from the approval requirement. In these cases, no application needs to be submitted to Austro Control GmbH.
  • Glare Assessment: below designated safety zones, Austro Control GmbH requires a glare assessment. Such an assessment may also be necessary outside these zones if the system is located near a heliport, a civil airfield, or air traffic control facilities, or if aviation safety is at risk. Within safety zones, responsibility lies with the authority responsible for issuing the civil airfield permit (BMK or BH), in coordination with the Federal Minister of Defense.
  • Calculation of System Size: if multiple PV plants are in close proximity to each other, their areas must be combined to determine the relevant total size.
