"Free Route" implementation moving forward

With the "South East Common Sky Initiative" (SECSI) cross-border Free Route Airspace (FRA) 2018 will be further expanded in Europe.
In close cooperation between Austro Control and the ANSPs from Slovenia (Slovenia Control), Croatia (Croatia Control), Serbia/Montenegro (SMATSA) and Bosnia-Hercegovina (BHANSA) the implementation of the "South East Common Sky Initiative" (SECSI) FRA is being prepared.

On November 15th a high-ranking User Forum was held in Vienna to inform stakeholders on the current status of the implementation and to get their feedback. Over 50 participants including representatives from 11 ANSPs (BHANSA, BULATSA, Croatia Control, DFS, ENAV, Hungaro Control,  LPS Slovakia, M-NAV, ROMATSA, Skyguide, SMATSA), from the airspace users (Austrian, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Ryan Air,  SAS, Swiss), from Eurocontrol, the Computer Flight Plan Software Providers and from FAB CE.

The "South East Common Sky Initiative" FRA will strengthen the South East Axis, by offering the shortest route options from Central Europe to Greece, Egypt or Turkey´s summer destinations. This initiative not only works towards achieving the goals of the European Commission regarding the implementation of “Free Route” across Europe but also fulfils airspace user´s requests for having multiple route options available for the same city-pair.

The cooperation of SAXFRA and SEAFRA will produce one of the largest cross-border Free Route airspaces in Europe and is a significant step towards achieving a common European Free Route Airspace by 2022.
